At Summer’s End

jmw turner sun setting over lake paintingAs beautiful a painting as any to close out the season, the depiction above may appear to be a masterpiece by Monet or Pissarro, among other giants of Impressionism. Yet Sun Setting Over a Lake (c. 1840) by “master of light,” British painter J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851), actually preceded the Impressionists by more than 30 years. A paradigmal artist, whose work continues to amaze by being so far ahead of its time, Turner’s last words before he died were said to be, “The sun is God.”
